30 years. That is how long Robert Smith and The Cure have been doing their thing. Quite a long time when you think about it... and believe me, I did think about it, I actually got quite philosophical...
But let us focus - this review is all about the pioneers of goth rock, the grandfathers of emo, and one of the most distinctive sounds in rock... yep, that’s The Cure.
And 2008 sees the release of album number 13, namely 4:13 Dream. It was preceded by 4 singles, each of those released on the 13th of each month... you get the drift. However what is most impressive about this album is that it remains as vital and essential as all those Cure albums that have come before it.
Highlights for mine are the epic opener ‘Underneath the Stars’. Clocking in at over 6 minutes, it dedicates the first half of the song to an atmospheric instrumental intro, before Smith showcases his vocal versatility by blending in perfectly to the songs mood. Then there is ‘This. Here and Now. With You’, which while being a standard pop song, it has this neat sonic effect working in behind the melody.
There could be an argument that this album is too familiar in some places... ‘The Only One’ and ‘The Reasons Why’ are like an old friend turning up at your door and inviting themselves in for dinner. My response to that would be that even a familiar album from The Cure far outstrips most other releases this year.
