This is the debut release for Auckland six piece An Emerald City. It delivers four tracks of organic instrumentation, revelling in the bands mantra to “strive for musical experimentation and liberation”.
I must admit, I was a bit sceptical when I read the PR notes saying that their music was the sound of the East meeting psychedelia... come on, from a New Zealand based band?
But you know what, not only do they nail that particular aspect, they also deliver a collection of tracks that are intense, brooding and emotive. Their use of different instrumentation is masterful – and whether it be violins, cello or sitar, it is the arrangements that set these tracks apart.
If you like your music worldly, you needn’t look any further.
