Review: Malcolm Phillipps
Released: 14/04/08

It is really quite remarkable how one artist can evoke such a distinct ‘New Zealandness’ within his sound.

Maybe it is just that Chris Knox, the spiritual godfather of the Flying Nun scene, has been doing this gig for so long, that his imprint is everywhere – both overtly through his own music and subliminally through his influence.

Yes, a lot of Knox’s 55 years have been dedicated to making music for his country to enjoy. So it is quite an achievement that here in 2008 he is still able to deliver an album which while being distinctly him, is also pleasingly set in the here and now.

In his latest incarnation as The Nothing, Chris Knox and band have put together A Warm Gun, 12 tracks of raw, eclectic rock – ranging from unstructured jams to melodic beauty. This diversity is perfectly illustrated by the two best tracks on the album. Firstly ‘In My Heart’, an unashamed love song, sparsely backed vocals coupled with a nicely built harmony (2008’s 'Not Given Lightly'). Then Mr Knox follows it up with the highly electric ‘Empty’ – classic guitars, harsh vocals, you can’t help but love this attempt at rock heaviness.

The remaining tracks are solid, but I can’t help feeling that this record will be remembered more for the height of its highs, rather than as a complete package.

Well worth a listen though.
