So who is Xavier Rudd?
Well I’ll be honest, I really had no idea at all.
Turns out he is an Australian singer/songwriter who is known as much for his psychedelic rock as he is for championing social and environmental issues... oh and in his spare time he is a didgeridoo virtuoso and a full-time "barefooter". Hmmm, this should be interesting...
To my surprise, on his fifth studio album Dark Shades of Blue, Rudd teams up with producer Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens of the Stone Age) to deliver 11 strong tracks of dark, brooding rock. Rudd resists the temptation to slip into the world music genre, while somehow managing to include slide guitars, harmonica and didgeridoo into his musical mix. The result is an album that comes across as a strange fusion of early Ben Harper and Tool – unique to say the least and all in all, a very compelling listen.
