When ‘Human’ was released as the lead single from The Killers third album, I initially thought... really? This? The band that gave us ‘Mr Brightside’, ‘All These Things That I’ve Done’ and ‘When You Were Young’ seems to be delving into remix ready synth pop. It ain’t bad, but I just kept waiting for it to take off as a song, and it never did.

So when Day & Age was released in full I popped it on with some trepidation. Could this be a new phenomenon, tricky third album syndrome?

Short answer, no. The Killers are going to be just fine. Once you play the album in its entirety, it all starts to make sense, yes, even ‘Human’ fits right in.

On Day & Age Brandon Flowers and co have done something really smart, they’ve veered back more towards their Hot Fuss sound, while continuing to add experimental elements to their music (for example the Caribbean flavoured intro and saxophone solo on ‘Joyride’).

There are still songs with the big Killer choruses, 'Spaceman' being the perfect example of this. But the more pervading style is one where the hook is a lot more subtle – tracks like ‘This Is Your Life’ and ‘I Can’t Stay’ are actually really intelligent and take a few listens to fully appreciate.

Some people have written this album off, but I’d recommend that you form your own opinion. You may well be pleasantly surprised.
