TV on the Radio is nothing if not experimental. Their earlier records were interesting beasts, admired more than loved, with each listen taking you into a diverse wonderland of sounds. On most recent outing Return to Cookie Mountain, the band began to find a mid-point between creativity and accessibility, ‘Wolf Like Me’ being a track that was the perfect embodiment of this balance.

Here on fourth album Dear Science, the journey appears to be complete. The record is still chock full of ideas and styles, but now it is wrapped up in a tight package that makes it one of the albums of the year.

So the styles... well, there is this delicious Prince like funk evident on ‘Crying’ and ‘Golden Age’. I swear, when I listen to these tracks it is like "the purple one" has had a sudden return to form (sorry Prince).

Then there are the ballads like ‘Love Dog’ and album highlight ‘Family Tree’. These numbers present the vocals of Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone in all their glory, displaying a level of sensitivity that hasn’t always been a feature of TVOTR.

If this hasn’t sold you, you’ll also find examples of rap, rock and orchestral arrangements – heck, these guys have it all.

With an upcoming slot at 2009’s Big Day Out, you’d be crazy not to grab a copy and secure a front row position at what will surely be the highlight of that day.
