Andrew Spraggon, the creative force behind Sola Rosa, has managed to draw together an incredibly talented pool of musicians on his latest album Get it Together. The result is a delicious album of smokey jazz ‘n’ blues filled funk.
Strong on keys, horns and addictive bass lines, it can be easy for a record such as this to fall into the generic. However what works so well on this release is that each of the guest collaborators bring something totally different to the table. German poet Bajka Pluswatch has a timeless voice, which absolutely owns ‘Humanised’ and ‘Lady Love’ – her voice oozes cool. Ex Jah Wobble frontman Spikey Tee then changes the tempo on ‘Love Alone’ – a reggae dub vibe giving providing a brief interlude to normal transmission.
However the show is stolen by Wellington singer Iva Lankum. Her vocals on ‘Turn Around’ are sublime and simply leave you wondering where this talent has been hiding. Her sultry voice evokes that of countless jazz matriarchs and has rightly become the lead single, presently being picked up by all discerning radio stations.
Get it Together is one of those times when all the ingredients, from all over the world, just fit... well... together. Nice.
