The story goes that thirteen years after founding Oasis, Andy McGee walked into the exact same Scottish club and as the procession of bands played, he spotted a group who were third on the bill... Glasvegas... from there he went back to his job writing a blog for the Guardian Newspaper and proclaimed them "stars of the future". You have to admit, McGee has a pretty good ear.
Fast forward two years from that Glasgow night and Glasvegas have released their self-titled debut album... and it just happens to be one of those albums where you put it on and it sounds like a classic at the very first listen.
So what’s it like? Well, think “wall of sound” rock, with a dark edge to the lyrics and a distinct Scottish brogue in the vocals... probably if you were looking to peg them to anyone you would say they are similar in style to The Jesus and Mary Chain. What makes them standout though is the level of emotion and melody that they manage to squeeze into each track... the best examples being ‘Geraldine’ and ‘Daddy’s Gone’, destined to be brit-rock anthems from day one.
A nod to the unique elements included in their lyrics is also deserved, with constant nuggets to pique your curiosity littered throughout. For example they break into 'You Are My Sunshine' at the end of 'Flowers and Football Tops' without it seeming strange. At other times they do tongue in cheek references to Oasis and include playground taunts as a standard lyric – strange, but it works.
Glasvegas have delivered the goods, I guess the question now is whether this was their Definitely, Maybe or their What’s the Story Morning Glory? Time will tell.
