It has been almost two full years since the Yeah Yeah Yeahs last blessed us with a new release, the 18 minute EP Is Is. To my mind that is two years too long and by all accounts, my opinion counts.

Now they are back in 2009 with their third full length album It’s Blitz!... and ladies and gentlemen, what a record it is. The synths have been dialled up, Karen O’s vocals are in fine form and the bands sense of melody is in full flight. This is alternative pop/rock of the highest order and sure to be one of the albums of the year.

Their most mature offering to date, the ten tracks here effortlessly straddle a diverse musical landscape – the synth heavy, dance floor ready ‘Zero’, the even punchier ‘Heads Will Roll’, the dreamy ‘Softshock’ and the straight forward pop of ‘Hysteric’. I think that the x-factor this time round is the shared production of Nick Launay (Arcade Fire, Talking Heads) and TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek – they have made the record sublimely tight sounding without dulling down the edge that the band is famous for.

This is essential. Absolutely.
