A rapper from Wellington. Awesome. But how the heck do you survive as a rapper in a city that boasts all these tight little units of "Fat Freddy, Black Seedy" type music fans.

Simple answer, you do your own thing and you do it well... and so Tommy Ill has.

On his latest EP, Matchsticks, Tommy Ill and his friend Buck Beauchamp successfully follow up the 2007 EP Toast and Tea Kettles. Two of the tracks from that record got nominated for bNet awards - it must have given him the taste for success.

On this effort we get seven funk riddled numbers, all tied together with Tommy’s smooth ‘n’ easy lyrical delivery. The highlight would have to be ‘Letters to the Editor’; old school beats and a perfect vocal interplay between him and Kimbra Johnson.

Not bad at all.
