Review: Malcolm Phillipps
Released: 05/08/08

Deerhunter is a five piece from Atlanta, Georgia. They dub themselves as ‘ambient punk’, while others call them ‘art rock’ - everyone loves to put a label on things.

On this, their third album, Deerhunter rise above the labels and produce an exquisite record which is sure to win them a huge following. Think shimmering, atmospheric pop/rock, with an edge that is always threatening to explode into white noise. It rarely does explode, instead you are left with 3-4 minute slices of pop perfection.

Now this band isn’t one for ‘singles’, so I’m going to respect them by sticking to the album concept that they embrace. The twelve tracks here cover feelings of loneliness, alienation and anxiety, bleak subjects some would think, but it never comes across that way. Their sound gives more than a nod to the happy clappy '50s & '60s, while the percussion always remains upbeat.

Having played in support of Battles, The Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails and TV on the Radio in recent times, it won’t be long before these guys are headlining in their own right. This has already been tipped as the album of the year by a number of critics... aren’t you even a little curious?
