The Veils reached some pretty giddy heights on their last album, Nux Vomica. It built them a fanatical fan base, while also gaining a fair amount of critical respect. The tracks ‘Calliope!’ and ‘Advice For Young Mothers’ even crossed over to the mainstream... perish the thought.

Given the way bands tend to self destruct after a modicum of success these days, it is almost surprising then that Finn Andrews and his merry band have raised the bar even higher on Sun Gangs. This album is superb.

Think big drama, think despair, think breaking hearts... all delivered through rock songs that descend into frenzy, and indie pop songs that remain sweetly melodic. All the while Andrew’s vocals are seemingly deciding whether they want to be Morrissey or Nick Cave. Hard to say which one wins.

The highlight for mine is the raw emotion of ‘It Hits Deep’ – pleading vocals laid over stripped back guitars and strings. One of my highlights of the year so far.

Just think... their live show was already great and with this collection of songs now available, it becomes an experience that can’t be missed. Keep an eye out.
