The Gaslight Anthem is an American Punk/Rock band from New Jersey. On The ’59 Sound, their second full length album, they stay true to their roots and deliver a collection of songs that will make their home town proud.
At times it is almost uncanny how a sound can be so distinctive to one location, yet from the opening strains of ‘Great Expectations’, New Jersey is exactly what this album evokes. It helps that lead vocalist Brian Fallon sounds uncannily like Bruce Springsteen, not the Ghost of Tom Joad Springsteen, but more like the vital Born to Run Springsteen that made ‘the boss’ who he is today.
This album has been dubbed a punk record by some, but in all fairness, with its story telling focus, the American working class lyrics and the slightly gentler pacing, this is very much a rock album - and what an excellent one it is.
It definitely isn’t earth-shattering stuff. This is simply a band doing a great job of putting a modern spin on a sound that has an incredibly rich heritage.
Americana never sounded so good.
