The Pigeon Detectives have finally released their debut album... just in time for that thing they call summer in the UK. The band has actually been around the brit-pop scene since 2002, so you can understand the sense of expectation that has grown in that time. With four well performed singles under their belts, this release has long threatened to go global.
So how does Wait For Me measure up? Well, pretty good, thanks for asking.
But first let’s be frank... this record isn’t going to blow your mind.
This is pure and simple, commercial brit-pop – presented in tightly packaged 2-3 minute bursts. It is undeniable however, that these are some of the catchier brit-pop numbers that you’re likely to hear in 2007.
Yes it’s derivative, yes the lyrics are all adolescent hijinks, but what makes this album enjoyable is the irrepressible up-tempo nature of each track. Eventually you just have to submit and enjoy it. Their use of everything from jangly guitars to hand-claps to shout-along choruses are expertly weaved in with an uncanny ear for melody.
My only complaint about Wait For Me is that the strongest tracks are the ones that have already been released as singles. So in terms of ‘brand new’ fare, fans may be a bit disappointed. However, if The Pigeon Detectives are all new to you, and you want to relive a London summer in your Kiwi winter – this could be just the ticket.
