Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is the fourth studio album by the French pop/rock band Phoenix.
I must admit, I had absolutely no idea who these guys were when I happened across them.... needless to say I have remedied that now and can quite happily announce this as the perfect summer album. If it is currently winter where you are, harden up, summer is a state of mind.
Right, back to the music... this collection of 10 tracks is absolute pop/rock perfection - giddily upbeat tunes that ironically chronicle everything from angst, confusion and disappointment before they head on into despair... ahhh despair.
But it is the way that this album is executed which makes it such a treat. Each track is stripped back to its essence. There is no pretension here. They are committed to delivering tight pop songs with addictive hooks – none of this getting sidetracked with indulgent artistic expression. Combine this direct approach with Thomas Mars’ sublime vocals, then add straight forward guitars and percussion, before marrying them up with '80s synths. Great recipe if you get the ingredients right. And they have.
In the past Phoenix followed a similar direction to Air and Daft Punk, never quite matching up to their more famous countrymen. Now they are setting out on their own path and it is going to pay big dividends.
