HUFFER
The last show on the last day of New Zealand Fashion Week, where half the punters were using the bar to literally prop themselves up, the effort it took to drag our over-worked, over-tired, hung-over bodies to Newmarket for the show were instantly rewarded with the biggest, funnest party of the week.
Huffer and Miss Crabb created more of an event than a fashion show, complete with overwhelming corporate sponsorship seen from the Audis out the front, to the tsunami of Jagermeister spilling all over the place, to the cute little illustrated video on the roof that was a creatively presented group of ads on loop.
The amount of money that this clever little streetwear lable had garnered for the evening seemed to be the real testament to their commercially savvy, extremely wearable, urban streetwear designs.
The runway was floor level and from my late-comer position of three rows deep it was hard to get a proper look at the clothes, though my initial impressions of the womenswear as being ‘a bit more designer, a little bit preppy, a few undies showing and some girlie sheer fabrics’ seem to be the result of the welcome input of Kristine Crabb and her more feminine deconstructed style.
Being probably the country’s most accessible menswear lable, I was interested to see if Huffer had created a move on. And despite some scarily Croc-like orange sneakers and some big buff commercial models that can bring a little too much ‘gay sailor’ to the singlet and beanie look, the Huffer boys presented a well rounded, well grounded collection that I’m sure will fly off the shelves faster than an Audi R8 tanked on jager-bombs.
