NOM*D

Nom*D's show last year, Bedlam, was definitely a precursor for this year's collection entitled Turncoats. Both were sinister and dark, expressing themes of mental asylums and lunatics. In the most impassioned and unconventional way, the outfits looked liked they'd been thrown together by a crazy person in the dark.

This year Nom*D exhibited a film instead of a runway show. I thought it was a refreshing way to do things but was glad that a selection of models came out at the end so it was possible to really see the clothes. As always, Karen Inderbitzen-Waller did a genius job of styling. It was so deconstructed that it was impossible to decipher one garment from another, but that's what Nom*D's all about - layering, mismatching and dismantling.

The first half of the film showed girls playing and smiling, dressed in unsullied white pinafores, bibs and aprons. But this all changes, children have to grow up. Soon we were seeing black suiting and carnal leather pieces acting as cages around the girls' bodies. It was meant to show the transition from innocence to self-expression and non-conformity. Finally, at the end of the video, Zippora is in a lake washing her hair and looking into the sunlight.

It was all slightly disturbing, but incredibly clever.
