How did the three of you come together to form NYNE?

Miranda:
I had been working as in Andrea Moore’s workroom. Then, after missing out on a job I wanted, Jake and I (my partner of seven years) decided to start our own label. I’d decided I didn’t want to waste time in other people’s businesses anymore and just felt I was capable of more. I knew from when I was 18 or so that I wanted to start my own business and the time and opportunity just seemed to present itself. From there we got Tina involved.

Tina: Jacob and I are old friends from high school. I had studied a two-year diploma in fashion design and worked in retail for a good eight years since then. I had a really small time label going already, then they called me and the rest is history.

Miranda and I actually didn't know each other when we started our business, we just had to trust Jacob's judgment. Pretty crazy when you look back.

Miranda: Yep, when Jake and I decided to involve Tina in our venture, Tina and I had never even met. Lucky we get on really!

Were you always interested in fashion?

Tina: Definitely yes! I read in one of my old school journals from when I was six years old that I wanted to be a hairdresser, then crossed it out and wrote fashion designer.

Miranda: I wasn’t the classic story of sewing all my own clothes growing up or anything like that, but I used to go shopping all the time with my mother. I was so jealous of her clothes and always wished I had her wardrobe. Once I hit my teens and came out of the ‘I want to look like everyone else’ phase, I pretty much went out of my way to try to not look like everyone else. That was when my interest evolved.

I’ve never been obsessed with fashion. I don’t really care what everyone else is doing, and I actually don’t like the word fashion - it sounds exclusive. My interest is in its empowerment. I know that sounds naff but I think it’s true. I have certain things or outfits that make me feel 10 feet tall and bulletproof. It’s an easy way to gain confidence and identity.
